The Connman Report Week of February 19, 2012 From the Desk of Bob Conn Well, it has been a week since our big NWA On Fire live event at the Rumford Armory in Rumford, Maine took place, and from the bottom of my heart and everyone else associated with NWA On Fire, we thank the folks of the Hope Association for being superb hosts. In my two years with NWA On Fire, I can’t remember a more gracious, giving host than the folks in Rumford. THANK YOU! Now, to the fallout of what myself the NWA On Fire wrestling fans witnessed on Saturday night comes to light. And, I must say, there will be heavy dues to pay once we get back together for more live events in April. First, to the NWA On Fire Heavyweight Championship. Just when you think champion Brian Fury can’t make you shake your head, he does something that I never thought I would see. Yes, Fury shaved Makua’s head, leaving the proud Samoan with a lot less hair than when he arrived in Rumford. This act is an insult to Makua’s heritage, and like I have asked before, why is the champion inciting the Samoan Warrior? I spoke to Makua afterwards, and he vows to get his revenge the next time he is in a building with one said Brian Fury. Next up is the tag team situation. First off, congratulations to the Shooting Stars for retaining their On Fire tag team championship with a clean victory over Capital Punishment, who had advanced to the match by winning a four-way gauntlet match earlier in the evening. Glenn and Steve stood toe to toe with the bigger Foxx Vinyer and Big Rob Coleman and came out on top, no controversy. Thinking of the tag teams, what a match the gauntlet match was. The new team of Sebastian Cruz and Julian Starr, two former heavyweight champions, was superb, that is until the NWA North American Tag Team Champions, the Rochester Wreckin’ Crew got involved. Hellcat and Rob Sweet caused Starr and Cruz to lose the match after the M1nute Men and Da Hoodz were eliminated. Later in the night, Sweet and Hellcat retained the titles against Starr in Cruz in perhaps the match of the night. What does the Rochester Wreckin’ Crew have in mind for down the road? We will have to wait and find out. Scotty Slade announced the formation of a Junior Division for NWA On Fire. Now, I haven’t heard of this officially as of yet, but I welcome the addition of this division. I can see some spirited competition coming from this, with Slade, the East Coast Cowboy, Nick Fahrenheit, Pat Mathews, both members of Da Hoodz and the M1nute Men and many others going after this title once it is created. I was none pleased at all to be stalked by the Giant Pharaoh in Rumford. The 7-foot-1 God King is quite intimidating when he stands before you, and I was quite frankly frozen in my tracks. Thank goodness WWE Hall of Famer Tony Atlas came to the ring to cause the Pharaoh to focus on the task at hand and not on this announcer. I admit, I can fight when I have to. I am a rather big guy (no, really), but I don’t have enough in my arsenal to combat the Giant Pharaoh, not that I would ever want to be faced with that. Dewey and Chip Stetson made an impact in Rumford, causing Da Hoodz to come up short again in their pursuit of the On Fire tag team titles. Like Da Hoodz say, you are either going to Get Down, OR Lay Down! Have the New York Express opened themselves up to a future butt whooping, or are Da Hoodz on a crash course with another setback? Others who impressed recently are Big John Riggs and the Sure Thing Mark Shurman, two competitors that can get it done inside the squared circle. Fans, I will have a lot more in the coming weeks concerning our April live events, and I have comments from many of our NWA On Fire, NWA New York, and BWO superstars, along with a passionate and intimidating statement from the NWA North American Tag Team Champions, Rochester Wreckin’ Crew. Stay tuned! For now, see you at the matches. The Connman |
